The purpose of this guide is to trigger thoughts to ensure you plan for prerequisites and options when considering an upgrade to Synergy V5.
It is important to review the information to insure you make informed decisions about how the upgrade will occur and the possible implications it may have on your organisation.
- There is no compatibility between major versions of Synergy.
- A Synergy V4 client can only connect to a Synergy V4 server. The same applies to our V5 client, it can only connect to a V5 server.
What we are aiming to achieve, is to provide understanding on the position you and your company may be in if you decide to upgrade to V5.
Also, understanding the impact this has and being able to work around challenges certain a scenario may bring up.
Who uses Synergy?
Please take a moment to think about how Synergy is used internally and externally:
- Are you working on a JV and connect to another instance of Synergy?
If you answered 'no', then the choice to upgrade becomes simpler. You only need to consider how you will upgrade your users within your environment.
If you answered 'yes', you will have to consider a a rollout that allows you to use both Synergy V4 and Synergy V5 in tandem.
In this case you must ensure you upgrade Synergy V4 to the at least V4.3.9 BEFORE installing V5.4.3.9 contains the ability to be uninstalled without affecting optional add-ins used by V5. - Do you have externals that connect to your instance of Synergy?
If these people are critical to your project, then you will need to gauge if they can upgrade their client as well. Otherwise, you risk locking them out of the project.
Ensure you engage with your externals to confirm how feasible it for them to upgrade their client.
How will you upgrade?
Due the the lack of connectivity between major versions. We recommend that you install Synergy V4 and V5 clients in tandem.
This will minimise the down time experienced by your users and provide the most readiness post upgrade. You can then in your own time, work to remove the V4 client.
For this work effectively, you MUST ensure you upgrade to a version of the V4 client equal to or higher than V4.3.9 before installing the V5 client.
Doing this will allow you to more efficiently uninstall V4 without impacting application add-ins. If you do not this, then you run the risk of removing V5 add-ins during the uninstall of V4.
