1.1. How to Prepare for a Migration
To migrate from one server to another, you have to copy all the files from the old server to the new one. If you have a large data set, it may take some time to copy the file data. This is especially true if you are copying from one virtual machine (VM) to another.
It is generally recommended that you perform the following steps before a migration.
- Start copying the files at least a week in advance.
- Stop the Server while migrating and take a backup of the database.
- Complete the file copy again, skipping files that were already copied.
You can use a tool such as RoboCopy to enhance the speed while migrating large amounts of data.
1.2. How to Mitigate Risk during a Migration
Before starting the migration procedure, it is suggested that you take a screenshot of your system to be able to rollback later, if necessary.
It is also recommended that you perform the following steps to mitigate the risk of losing data.
- Do not move the files during the file migration step.
- Do not drop the database until the migrated system is ready and up and running.
